Circular Myths Re-Examined

by Patricia Murray

The following article appeared in the July issue of SC - The monthly journal of Crop Circles and beyond.

Features
Whatever happened to..? Over the years, many fascinating cerealogical snippets and information-bites have flown around, livening up many a lecture and pub conversation, myths growing in their wake. But how many are ever substantiated? Patricia Murray goes on the trail of missing evidence...

Oh, the Mysteries of the Circles!  And - as if they were not mysterious enough - there seems to be a team of disinformation fairies adding new ingredients. Bewildered by this, I put out an appeal for further information. Perhaps some of these questions can be laid to rest.

1. Doug and Dave
How many readers of this magazine, researchers and lecturers have heard the statement from friends and strangers; "Didn't you know - they found out who made them? It was those two old guys from the pub." Thank you for telling me that, you may say. I really appreciate the insight. This story has more legs than a centipede. Just when you think you have slain the last monstrous question on this subject, it raises yet another ugly head and shuffles right up to you. It doesn't matter that Dave has been dead for almost two years now, nor the fact that when questioned these two pub rats knew nothing about geometry or phi or Euclid's theorems. The story just keeps on walking as the crop circles keep appearing.

2. 2000 Indian Crop Circles
2000 (read it again - two thousand) circles in India were reported amid much flurry and excitement in the summer of 1996. Everyone believed it. Here we are, nearly two years later. Has anyone seen photographs of 2000 circles? Of 200? Of 20? of One? Perhaps they are being kept quiet for security reasons.

3. Dreischor, Holland
The beautiful formation in Dreischor, Holland in July of last year was promptly claimed as a hoax by a team who said they had deposited drawings of the proposed formation with a lawyer before they made it. Everyone believed them. Several months later, some of us have asked: where are the drawings? Who is this lawyer? A soft shoe shuffle, anyone?

4. Oliver's Castle Confession
Though it was always doubtful whether "John Wabe" was actually the name of the man who shot the Oliver's Castle footage, we were assured - repeatedly - that whoever he was, he was about to "confess" on TV in England, America and Japan. Air dates were given for July and then for August of 1997 but, to our astonishment, there was no confession and no TV show. The accusers went strangely silent. Those of us with a grain of discernment have come to realize that these "confessions" are meaningless. Nonetheless, we ask what happened to the TV program and, if it is not going to arrive, what happened to the humble apologies of those who grossly misled so many? Do the hustle. Also, be wary of any researcher whose theories worn like a plume in their hat or who barges in on you at The Barge raving about his "discoveries".

5. Tree Circles
The idea of tree circles (allegedly once seen from an aeroplane swirled into the tops of pines-Editor) has now become part of the culture. Has anyone ever seen a photograph? Does anyone know the location? The date? This is really mysterious as a tree circle would be hard to miss and easy to photograph from below. We know that there have been agriglyphs in crops, wild grass, wildflowers, ice, snow and sand. We have pictures of all of these but was there ever, really, a tree circle? Not good research, but a great crowd pleaser.

6. ADAS
ADAS was a scientific group which acted as consultants to the British Government. They also sold their services to anyone who could pay. One of these patrons was the CCCS, who believed that ADAS could, finally, demonstrate in the name of science, via soil analysis, that something strange was happening around the circles. The strangest thing to happen around ADAS was that the two scientists working on the circles were fired from their government position. But what of the nitrogen/nitrate anomalies which were trumpeted very loudly by some individuals as being the ever-elusive "litus test". Whatever happened?
