Stanton St. Bernard, Wiltshire

This little formation holds a special place for me. Every summer we stay in the little village of Stanton St Bernard and this formation appeared in the field nearest our house. Not only that, it arrived on the morning I flew in from California and was waiting as I drove in. What a welcome!

It was, for many, an unremarkable crop circle but (even putting my personal prejudices aside) I found it most rewarding. It was positioned on the highest point of the field, a slight swell in the ground and was clearly visible close to the road. The wheat was less than perfect, less than dense, but in spite of that the formation was nicely formed. Some felt that it was reminiscent of the classic pictograms of the early '90s but I do not recall anything quite like this.

Two points to notice. First, the four satellites of the Celtic Cross elements were eccentrically placed. Two of them obeyed the rule and were directly opposite each other but the other pair were conspicuously out of line. I do not know what this might mean but certainly the quintuplet/Celtic Cross symbols have always carried a richness of implicit meaning. Secondly, the deliberate placing of a semi-circle in just one of the two smaller circles is an enigmatic design gesture.
