Devills Den, Wiltshire

To the best of my knowledge this is the first crop formation to appear in this area. The Devil's Den is a small group of ancient stones which lies on the Marlborough Downs north of the A4 highway. This mysterious and relatively remote area is said to be the source of the gigantic sandstone sarsens used at Stonehenge 24 miles away. (These should not be confused with the Bluestones, also at Stonehenge, which were transported a staggering 135 miles from Preseli in Wales.) Just a mile north of the Devil's Den lies a huge field of enormous stones which is possibly the precise source of the Stonehenge Sarsens.

The formation itself is a hexagram, a six-pointed star, lying on top of a hexagon, a six-sided figure. The star has two large rings within it and, going across the formation from each point to the opposite one, a series of circles increasing and decreasing in size. There are three lines of circles crossing the formation and there is something in the control of the sizes and proportions here which is profoundly satisfying. Each of the lines contains 11 circles. Eleven is the first number of the Master Number sequence and has appeared already in the Menorah formation at Barbury Castle on 31st May. Each of these circles had a spectacular, chrysanthemum-like centre. The crop was swirled down to form the lay of each circle, but a standing tuft was left for a moment at each centre. When the main floor lay was down, each tuft wasd outwards like a flower to cover the centre of the swirled lay.

Unfortunately, some of the formation was later damaged by the down-draft from an irresponsibly low helicopter.
