Cherhill, Wiltshire

This complex and sophisticated rotating formation was beautifully laid in strong wheat below the Cherhill white horse and almost directly due north of the monument on the top of the hill. This group of fields - a gentle sweeping scoop of land below the ridge - has been the site of several important formations over the years.

The outer perimeter was made of nine triangles, each a part of the three equilaterals which formed the basis of the formation. A clever rotational geometry was used to give the appearance of spinning and mobility. At the centre are six spinning crescents, tightly grouped and organised. It is rare for two separate number systems to be so beautifully coordinated in this way.

There is an intriguing signature to the west of the formation. This exact little form appeared by the Dadford double pentagram of 4th July 1998 and again by the top of this year's 1020 foot Alton Barnes formation. Clearly, the persistent repetition of this enigmatic symbol demands our attention, but it remains unclear what it might mean. At a certain angle it can be read as a little cartoon elephant; perhaps a reference to the Indian elephant god, Ganesh. Some see this as a Systrum, an ancient Egyptian musical device.
