Barbury Castle, Wiltshire

Barbury Castle is an ancient fortified earthwork which offers fine views over surrounding plains and fields. The Barbury Castle triangle of 1991, perhaps the best known of all crop circles, was here. This year, the area has had the Menorah of 31st May and several others. There is a general feeling here that this zone of activity is not yet exhausted.

This formation is positioned at the foot of the hill holding the earthwork. It offers a viewing position almost equal to that from the air.

A large flattened circle contains a fine standing ring and, within that, a lovely pattern of three gracefully interlaced crescents. It is immediately reminiscent of Asian calligraphy or graphics and, in fact, we have been told by a Japanese visitor that this pattern is the Japanese symbol for woman or goddess. We would appreciate confirmation of this.

It has been pointed out that the centre space between the crescent is a convex equilateral triangle, a shape with a recurring importance in the crop circles. It shares this component with Hackpen Hill (4th July), another rotating three-fold formation.
