Polly and Tim Carson's East Field at Alton Barnes is once again the site of a crop circle of great size and importance. Laid in barley, with a powerful sweeping lay, this formation was at first thought to be over 700 feet long. Though it has not been measured, the general consensus now has it at over 1000 feet.
This formation is - apart from its great length - not original. It seems to reiterate most of the classic themes of the pictograms of the early 1990s, providing a catalogue or encyclopaedia of components. Andreas Müller, in a typically scholarly study, has identified 18 clear and separate historical references.
Two weeks after the formation arrived, the crop is showing profound effects. While the stems in the field generally are green and immature, the heads held stiffly vertical, the plants within an approximate 50 foot zone around the formation are markedly more mature. The heads are golden and drooping and the individual grains are about three times larger.
